What we have done so far...
Abu and I started dreaming about helping our home country, Sierra Leone in 2005. By the end of the year we began to share our dream with our friends at Appplewood Community Church and other Sierra Leoneans. That prompted our first Growing A Heart For Sierra Leone concert at Arvada Covenant Church in Arvada, Colorado. The concert happened on the 15th of November 2005.
In lieu of gate fee, we requested that people bring schools supplies for the children of Sierra Leone. The response was encouraging. We subsequently collected more school supplies and the first shipment was sent by Applewood Community Church in October of 2006. These supplies were given as Christmas gifts to young people at Christians In Action and the Good News Assembly of God churches in S/L.
Since then we have held similar Growing A Heart For Sierra Leone concerts at: Bear Valley Church (June 2006); Colorado Community Church (November 2007); Foothills Bible Church (March 2008); Mountain West Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia (July 2008); and St. Mark’s in London England. Following the concert at Foothills Bible Church, we had our first Rebuild Sierra Leone Board of Trustees meeting on the 8th of March 2008. We discussed possible officers and started the process of writing the organization’s bylaws.
During these concerts we collected more school supplies which were eventually shipped in a 20-foot cargo container. The shipment was followed by a music team of 7 people who were in Sierra Leone from the 22nd to the 30th of September 2008. The school supplies were distributed to the kids at the El Shaddai Orphanage and the Eva Houston Primary school in Freetown. While in Sierra Leone, the team participated at the annual conference of the Evangelical Fellowship of Sierra Leone (EFSL). They also held a free concert at the Good News Assemblies of God Church and a music and worship seminar. The team also visited the El Shaddai Orphanage home which Rebuild Sierra Leone and Foothills Bible Church are partnering to sponsor.
